Infantile isolated sulphite oxidase deficiency in a Chinese family: a rare neurodegenerative disorder.

چکیده
We report the clinical, biochemical, neuroradiological, and neurophysiological findings of a 4-year-old Chinese girl with infantile isolated sulphite oxidase deficiency. This is the first reported case in our locality. She presented at the age of 5 months with refractory seizures and developmental regression, and progressed rapidly to profound psychomotor retardation, spasticity, dystonia, microcephaly, and blindness. At the age of 3.5 years, she was admitted to the intensive care unit with septic shock. Ophthalmologic examination at this time revealed bilateral dislocation of the lens. Diagnosis of this very rare disorder was made on the basis of increased levels of urinary sulphite, thiosulphate, and sulphocysteine; normal urine xanthine and hypoxanthine; normal plasma uric acid; and low plasma cystine levels. The diagnosis was confirmed by the absence of sulphite oxidase activities in skin fibroblasts. Isolated sulphite oxidase deficiency is a rare inborn error of sulphur metabolism that is difficult to diagnose on clinical features and routine metabolic tests. The presence of ectopia lentis, seizures, and progressive neurological abnormalities should alert clinicians to the diagnosis.

New approaches towards laboratory diagnosis of isolated sulphite oxidase deficiency.
BACKGROUND Molybdenum cofactor deficiency (resulting in combined deficiencies of the enzymes sulphite oxidase, xanthine dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase) and isolated sulphite oxidase deficiency are inherited metabolic diseases which follow an autosomal recessive trait of inheritance. Detection of these diseases in selective screening for inborn errors of metabolism is not easy because ...

BACKGROUND Molybdenum cofactor deficiency (MOCOD) is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by sulphite oxidase enzyme deficiency. The neuropathological findings are consistent with a toxic insult to the brain that causes severe neuronal loss, reactive astrogliosis and spongiosis. The mechanisms responsible for these changes are unknown. METHODS The case is a male infant with M...

Among several peroxisomal neurodegenerative disorders, the pseudoneonatal adrenoleukodystrophy(P-NALD) is characterized by the acyl-coenzymeAoxidase 1 (ACOX1) deficiency, which leadsto the accumulation of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) and inflammatory demyelination. However, the components of this inflammatory process in P-NALD remain elusive. In this study, we usedtranscriptomic profiling...
متن کاملInfantile spasms and hyperekplexia associated with isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency.
IMPORTANCE Isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency (ISOD) causes severe intellectual disability, epilepsy, and shortened life expectancy. Intractable seizures are invariable in children with ISOD; however, to our knowledge, infantile spasms with a corresponding hypsarrhythmia pattern on electroencephalogram have never been reported. In addition, the nonepileptic paroxysmal movement disorder hyperek...
